Treating Allergies with Ayurveda and Ayurvastra

on Aug 09 2024
Ayurveda, a 5000-year-old health discipline, the ancient Indian science of life, promotes disease prevention and holistic wellness. It emphasizes harmony among the five elements that constitute the human body: - Prithvi (Earth) - Ap (Water) - Tejas (Fire) - Vayu (Air) - Akash (Space) These elements form the three fundamental life forces, or Doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which influence both the mind and body. Ayurvedic principles also extend to Ayurvastra, where fabric dyed with herbal and botanical concoctions aids in promoting health and wellness, offering a natural solution to allergies.   Understanding Allergies An allergy is an immune system condition that results in an unfavorable response to a typically harmless substance. These substances, known as allergens, can include specific foods, environmental irritants, medications, and weather patterns. The body's reaction to allergens involves the release of Histamine, causing symptoms like nasal congestion, skin irritation, digestive issues, and more.   Ayurvedic Perspective on Allergies According to Ayurveda, allergies stem from an imbalance of the three Doshas. This imbalance weakens the immune system, making it difficult for the body to eliminate toxins. Ayurvedic remedies target the root cause of allergies rather than just addressing the symptoms.   Dosha-Related Allergies and Their Ayurvedic Management Vata-Type Allergies Symptoms: Gas, bloating, abdominal pain, cramps, mouth tingling, swelling of lips, tongue, and face. Management: - Stay hydrated with warm herbal beverages. One can try teas like ginger tea with honey or licorice tea. - Consume calming herbs like Ashwagandha. - Eat smooth-textured foods such as porridge, rice pudding, bananas, hot cereal, root vegetables, and soups.   Pitta-Type Allergies Symptoms: Prone to respiratory and skin irritation, burning eyes, sinus inflammation, hives, rashes, eczema, heartburn, indigestion, and vomiting. Management: - Use cooling herbs like coriander and cilantro. - Accumulate soothing the respiratory system and skin with guduchi, amalaki, and neem in routine. - Consume clarified butter or ghee and cool liquids made from natural ingredients like Lemon water. - Limit sour cream, almonds, hard cheese, and eggs.   Kapha-Type Allergies Symptoms: Nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose, mucous membrane irritation, hay fever, sinus infection, asthma, bronchial congestion, water retention, and sleep issues. Management: - Drink light, clarifying teas with ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon. - Eat light, dry, comforting dishes prepared as fresh as possible. - Balance mucus formation and control moisture levels.   Ayurvedic and Ayurvastra Solutions for Allergy Management Panchakarma Therapy Panchakarma therapy combines traditional Ayurvedic treatments to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. This detoxification process involves five steps to purge and eliminate toxins: Vamanam: Induced vomiting. Virechana: Therapeutic purging. Vasti: Enema therapy. Nasya: Nasal cleansing. Raktamokshanam: Blood purification.   Natural Treatments, Including Diet and Lifestyle Changes - Eat warm, light, and freshly prepared food. - Reduce or avoid dairy if causing indigestion. - Exercise regularly and practice pranayama (breath control). - Use spices and herbs like cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, coriander, garlic, cumin seeds, and black pepper.     Miho and Ayurvastra: Enhancing Allergy Management Miho integrates Ayurvedic principles through Ayurvastra, creating garments dyed with herbal and botanical concoctions that promote health and wellness. Eczema Relief Through Ayurveda: Top 5 Natural Treatments

on Aug 01 2024
According to recent reports, approximately 20 million people in India suffer from some form of eczema. They further state that one in ten individuals will develop eczema during their lifetime, with its prevalence potentially peaking in early childhood. Despite its widespread occurrence, people still fail to understand the symptoms of eczema and assume the irritation is due to dry skin. Here we will understand eczema better for its early detection and prevention:   What is Eczema?   Eczema is a skin condition accompanied by severe rashes and extreme itching. The cause can vary from genetics and abnormal immune systems to defects in moisture supply to the skin membrane. Thyroid is another reason that can lead up to the skin issue. It is an atopic disease, like asthma, and its symptoms can worsen if the skin is exposed to the following triggers: - Extreme temperatures (harsh enough to strip skin moisture) - Harsh chemicals (detergents, soaps, perfumes) - Allergens in the air (pollen, dust mites, etc.) - Anxiety and Insomnia   Why Choose the Ayurvedic Root?   Ayurveda, the world’s oldest healing system originated in India, believes in bringing alignment and balance to one’s anatomy through food and lifestyle habits. According to the holistic approach of Ayurveda, a person’s perfect health is all about maintaining a perfect balance of three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Let us now explore the various Ayurvedic treatments for eczema that help eradicate the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms!   Effective Ayurvedic Treatments for Eczema: Top 5 Natural Remedies   Panchakarma: The Ayurvedic Framework for Eczema Treatment Panchakarma is an intervention just like a general physician’s consultation, that deeply assesses food habits, sleep patterns, stress levels, and more to detoxify both mentally and physically. This involves incorporating dietary changes as instructed by Ayurvedic practitioners to improve the patient’s metabolism by ensuring the food consumed is healthy, on time, and appropriate for the person’s body type and lifestyle. Abhyanga: The Ayurvedic Oil Massage for Eczema Relief Sarvanga Abhyanga is advocated in the case of eczema, where the whole body is massaged with herb-enriched oils. This immediately calms the inflammatory rashes, removes toxins from the skin, and provides the appropriate moisture and nourishment required. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system relaxing the patient’s mood, stress, and anxiety.   Virechana: Detoxification Therapy for Eczema in Ayurveda Virechana is a form of purgative therapy where herbs are administered to remove excess pitta from the stomach and intestines. The principle behind this therapy is that a sedentary lifestyle with a poor diet leads to irregular bowel movements, which might result accumulation of toxic waste. Ayurveda believes that waste not flushed out regularly can cause flare-ups. The purgative drug’s dosage is prescribed by an Ayurvedic practitioner based on the individual’s age and the intensity of the problem.   Vamana: Ayurvedic Emesis Therapy for Eczema Treatment Vamana is another popular Ayurvedic treatment that induces controlled vomiting as guided by the practitioner. The aim of this treatment is to eject Kapha along with toxins from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. This increases the patient’s digestion and metabolism. It has also proved beneficial to skin health and nourishment. Usually, post the Vamana treatment, Virechana is prescribed to complete holistic detoxification of toxins.   Lepa: Ayurvedic Herbal Paste Therapy for Eczema Lepa is an Ayurvedic paste made from herbs prescribed to manage the inflammation or flare-ups of eczema lesions and rashes. A common lepa used for eczema is Dashanga lepa, made of 10 potent herbs with proven healing effects. Dashanga lepa helps manage the burning sensation and pain caused by eczema flare-ups. However, this is strictly for external treatment and not for oral intake.   Incorporating Ayurvastra: Healing Through Clothing At Miho, we believe in the power of Ayurvastra, a unique blend of Ayurveda and textiles. Ayurvastra fabrics are infused with medicinal herbs, in this case, the same herbs used in Dashanga Lepa, offering additional benefits to those suffering from skin conditions like eczema. Wearing Ayurvastra-treated clothing can enhance the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments by providing constant, gentle exposure to healing herbs, promoting overall skin health and well-being.   Note: The information in this article is intended for your educational use only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Understanding Contact Dermatitis in Children: A Growing Concern in India and the Healing Potential of Ayurvastra

on Jun 01 2024
What is Contact Dermatitis? Contact dermatitis is a type of skin inflammation that occurs when the skin comes into direct contact with an irritant or allergen. Have you ever used a new type of skin care product or detergent or worn some clothes only to have your skin become discolored and irritated? If so, you may have experienced contact dermatitis. This condition occurs when chemicals you come into contact with cause a reaction. The condition is characterized by red, itchy, and sometimes swollen skin, often accompanied by blisters or dry, scaly patches. There are two main types of contact dermatitis: Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD): It is the most common type of contact dermatitis caused by direct damage to the skin from irritants such as chemicals, dyes, soaps, and detergents. Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD): This causes your body to release inflammatory chemicals that can make your skin feel itchy and irritated triggered by an allergic reaction to substances like certain metals, fragrances, and plants. Fig. how contact dermatitis can look like.   Effects of Contact Dermatitis on Children in India Contact dermatitis is particularly concerning in children due to their sensitive skin and developing immune systems. There is now growing evidence of contact sensitization of the pediatric population, and it begins right from early childhood, including 1-week-old neonates. The consequences of undiagnosed and untreated ACD in children and in their family can be severe. Among children with suspected contact dermatitis referred for patch testing, positive patch test rates have ranged from 14% to 70%. Of these, about 56-93% have been thought of current relevance.  Moreover, atopic eczema may be an important risk factor for the development of ACD in children rather than in adults. In the study by the NACDG, of those with a reactive patch test, children (34.0%) were more likely than adults (11.2%) to have a final diagnosis that included atopic eczema. Several factors contribute to the prevalence and severity of this condition among children: Environmental Factors: India’s diverse climate, ranging from hot and humid to dry and cold, can exacerbate skin issues. Pollutants and allergens in urban areas further aggravate the situation. Hygiene Practices: Inadequate sanitation, child labor in different industries and exposure to harsh soaps and detergents can lead to irritant contact dermatitis. Children in rural areas may be more susceptible due to limited access to gentle skincare products. Cultural Practices: The use of traditional clothing and accessories, which may contain allergens such as nickel or certain dyes, can trigger allergic reactions. Diet and Lifestyle: Nutritional deficiencies and lifestyle factors can weaken the skin’s barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritants and allergens.   The Impact on Children’s Health and Well-being Contact dermatitis can significantly affect a child’s quality of life. The persistent itching and discomfort can lead to: Sleep Disturbances: Constant itching and discomfort can disrupt a child’s sleep, impacting their overall health and cognitive development. Psychological Effects: Visible skin conditions can affect a child’s self-esteem and social interactions, leading to anxiety and depression. Secondary Infections: Scratching can break the skin, leading to secondary bacterial infections which can be serious if not treated promptly.   Protect your child's skin with these simple tips to prevent contact dermatitis: Choose Gentle Fabrics Opt for soft, natural fabrics like cotton and Ayurvastra. Avoid synthetic materials that can irritate the skin. Use Mild Soaps & Detergents Select hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products. Rinse clothes thoroughly to remove detergent residues. Keep Skin Moisturized Apply gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers daily. Look for products with natural ingredients like aloe vera. Avoid Known Allergens Be aware of common triggers like nickel, certain plants, and dyes. Check labels for potential allergens. Maintain Good Hygiene Regular baths with mild, lukewarm water. Pat dry and avoid vigorous rubbing of the skin. Stay Hydrated Ensure your child drinks plenty of water. Hydrated skin is less prone to irritation. Dress Appropriately Use Ayurvastra clothing for its healing properties. Dress your child in weather-appropriate layers. Create a Safe Play Environment Minimize exposure to harsh chemicals and irritants. Keep outdoor play areas free of known allergens. Consult a Dermatologist Seek professional advice for persistent skin issues. Regular check-ups can help manage and prevent flare-ups.   Ayurvastra: A Natural Remedy for Contact Dermatitis Ayurvastra which loosely translates to "Ayurvedic cloth," is a traditional textile practice that combines Ayurvedic principles with the process of fabric making. These garments are infused with medicinal herbs known for their healing properties. Here’s how Ayurvastra can benefit children suffering from contact dermatitis or prevent the chances of the same: Natural and Non-Toxic: Ayurvastra is made using natural fibres like cotton, bamboo, wool, hemp, silk - dyed with herbal extracts, ensuring that no synthetic chemicals come into contact with the skin. This is particularly beneficial for children as their sensitive skin is prone to reactions from synthetic fabrics and dyes. Healing Properties: Herbs used in Ayurvastra, such as neem, indigo, turmeric, and sandalwood, have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing properties. These can help reduce inflammation, prevent infections, and promote overall wellbeing and healing of the skin. Enhanced Comfort: The breathable and soft nature of Ayurvastra garments made from natural fabrics can reduce skin irritation and provide comfort, essential for children who are already experiencing discomfort from dermatitis. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly: Ayurvastra supports sustainable practices, which are beneficial for the environment and help in reducing exposure to pollutants and allergens in total for generic prevention.   Implementing Ayurvastra for Dermatitis Relief For parents considering Ayurvastra for their children suffering from skin related issues or extra sensitive skin, here are some practical tips: Clothing Choices: Incorporate Ayurvastra into daily wear, especially for items that are in direct contact with the skin, such as underwear, casual wear, sleepwear, towels and bed linens. Consistency: Regular use of Ayurvastra provides continuous exposure to the healing properties of the herbs, aiding in long-term skin health and wellness. Complementary Care: Combine the use of Ayurvastra with other skin care routines recommended by healthcare professionals, such as using gentle, hypoallergenic, non-toxic or fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers.   Conclusion Contact dermatitis is a common yet challenging condition, particularly for children due to various environmental and lifestyle factors. Embracing traditional practices like Ayurvastra offers a natural, non-toxic approach to managing and alleviating the symptoms of dermatitis by simply implicating in everyday life. By integrating the wisdom of Ayurveda through Ayurvastra with other modern care practices, we can provide children with a holistic and sustainable solution for healthier skin and a better quality of life.

Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and in Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Following this system, the physical body emerges from the mind.Rooted in the principles of balance and harmony, Ayurvedic principles can enrich and elevate our urban lifestyles. Ayurveda is a science that elaborates on the quality of life, life-promoting factors, and life duration. Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages health maintenance through close attention to balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and herbs. The science of Ayurveda can be viewed as an umbrella discipline or ‘mother’ of many modern-day alternative therapies. Let's delve into a detailed yet simple guide on how Ayurveda can be applied in contemporary urban life. UNDERSTANDING AYURVEDA: At the core of understanding Ayurveda, lies the belief that the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected, and achieving balance and harmony among these elements is essential for optimal health. The Ayurvedic texts contain profound understanding of the deeper workings of nature and the rhythms and cycles that govern all life on earth. According to Ayurveda, each individual possesses a unique constitution, or "dosha," which comprises the elements of air (Vata), fire (Pitta), and earth (Kapha). “Ayu” is the duration of life and reflects the broad spectrum of Ayurveda. According to this definition of “Ayu”, even a bacterium is a living being and therefore a subject to Ayurveda. Imbalances in these doshas can lead to illness, while harmony fosters well-being. Ayurveda promotes focus on health and health only. Once we have an exclusive focus on health, disease prevention becomes incidental and complete. It is no longer disease prevention; it is diseases elimination. Balance is the natural order; imbalance is disorder. Health is order; disease is disorder. Within the body there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. When one understands the nature and structure of disorder, one can re-establish order. SLEEP SCHEDULE: The concept of Dinacharya, or daily routine, emphasizes the importance of aligning our activities with the natural rhythms of the day ie., the environment around us. The imbalances in our sleep patterns can be very discouraging—even debilitating—and the task of getting back on track can feel incredibly daunting. Sleep is a natural time for the body and mind to rest, reset, detoxify, and rejuvenate—and sleep is carefully regulated by our bodies. A consistent sleep schedule is paramount for maintaining balance. Charaka Samhita, the ancient Sanskrit text on Ayurveda, mentions six types of sleep. According to the text, sleep may be due to:• natural sleep without external imbalances• depression• increased kapha caused by eating an excess of foods like chocolate, cheese, or fried food• exhaustion of mind and body caused by excessive physical work• chronic disease• imbalance or injury in the body Further, sleep has been linked to important changes in the structure and function of the brain. When it comes to infants and young children, sleep (and a lot of it) is absolutely critical to proper brain development. In adults, similar correlations have been drawn between sleep and the brain’s ability to reorganize itself and form new neural pathways. Going to bed early and rising with the sun is recommended to synchronize with nature's cycles. Adequate, undisturbed sleep supports physical rejuvenation and mental clarity, crucial for navigating the demands of urban life. One 2013 study noted that regular practice of yoga along with pranayama, or deep breathing exercise, in the morning also helps in improved sleep. Research from 2020 also shows that ashwagandha root, known as Indian ginseng, may improve sleep quality. Ashwagandha powder, along with nutmeg, can be taken with warm milk. EXERCISE: Ayurveda recommends exercise that complements one's dosha constitution. Vata types benefit from grounding practices such as yoga and walking, while Pitta individuals thrive on moderate, cooling activities like swimming or cycling. Kapha types benefit from invigorating exercises such as brisk walking or vigorous dancing to stimulate circulation and energy flow. Ayurveda recommends the morning time 6 am to 10 am as a time for rejuvenation and achieving optimal health. The evening is the ideal time to relax, rest and rejuvenate. Healthy exercise from the Ayurvedic perspective means exercising to half your capacity. At this stage, you can still breathe through the nose, although breathing is deeper, and you can still chat easily. Slight sweating is good. Consistency and moderation are key, avoiding excessive strain that could disrupt dosha balance. FOOD: Ayurveda attributes 80% of all disease to imbalances of the digestive system and, therefore, much attention is given to its maintenance. Diet plays a central role in Ayurveda, with a focus on wholesome, seasonal, local foods that nourish the body and support digestion. Incorporating the six tastes—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent—ensures a balanced meal that satisfies both physical and emotional cravings. Mindful eating, free from distractions, enhances digestion and absorption of nutrients. The Ayurvedic diet is a type of eating plan that sets guidelines for when, how, and what you should eat based on your dosha, or body type. For example, the pitta dosha focuses on cooling, energizing foods and limits spices, nuts, and seeds. Meanwhile, the vata dosha favors warm, moist, and grounding foods while restricting dried fruits, bitter herbs, and raw veggies. Finally, the kapha dosha limits heavy foods like nuts, seeds, and oils in favor of fruits, veggies, and legumes. Although the Ayurvedic diet has specific guidelines for each dosha, the diet as a whole encourages eating whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. Additionally, Ayurveda advises against overeating and encourages regular fasting to detoxify and rejuvenate the body. TEXTILES: Ayurveda extends its principles to the fabrics we wear, recognizing their impact on our well-being. It prefers natural fibers such as cotton, silk, and wool for their breathability and ability to regulate body temperature. Synthetic materials may disrupt energy flow and exacerbate dosha imbalances. Choosing clothing that aligns with the climate and personal comfort fosters harmony within and without. Another concept of Ayurvedic clothing is called Ayurvastra - the art of producing natural textiles made of natural fiber such as cotton yarn, jute fibre, silk, wool etc. and dying them with medicinal herbs. Ayurvastra clothing is completely free of synthetic chemicals and toxic irritants and is totally organic, sustainable and biodegradable. Plant-based dyes not only eliminate the effects of chemical dyes in the water supply, but also have more subtle healing aspects for the wearer. The roots, flowers, leaves, seeds and barks of more than 200 medicinal herbs, plants, flowers, roots, and barks are used to make the dyes. In Ayurvastra, the color is gained from the medicinal preparation only — no other colorants are used. The herbs used are different from vegetable dyes as they are not only natural but also have medicinal value. For example, for diabetes, cloth dyers combine Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), Cumin (Cuminum cyminum), flowers from the sacred Champa tree (Michelia champaka) and Shoe flower (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). The most effective time to wear the herbal-infused clothing is while resting, sleeping or meditating, when the body is naturally healing and re-establishing balance, so many of the products are created with those effects in mind. MINDFULNESS AND STRESS MANAGEMENT: In the fast-paced urban environment, stress has become a prevalent concern impacting overall health. Ayurveda emphasizes the practice of mindfulness and stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and aromatherapy. Ayurveda places significant importance on the mind-body connection and believes that practices like yoga and meditation are essential tools for managing stress and promoting overall well-being. These practices are tailored to an individual’s constitution (dosha) and can help balance the doshas, calm the mind, and reduce stress. Cultivating awareness of thoughts and emotions allows for conscious responses rather than reactive behavior, promoting inner peace and resilience in the face of challenges.Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils extracted from plants for therapeutic purposes, can be a valuable tool for managing stress according to Ayurveda. Ayurveda places a strong emphasis on the sense of smell and its impact on the mind and emotions. Aromatherapy can help balance the doshas, calm the nervous system, and promote relaxation. Stress management through Ayurveda is a multifaceted approach involving diet, herbal treatments, and lifestyle changes. CONCLUSION: Integrating Ayurvedic principles into modern urban life offers a roadmap to holistic wellness, balancing the demands of work, relationships, and self-care. By aligning with the rhythms of nature and honouring our unique constitutions, we can cultivate vitality, resilience, and harmony in our daily lives. Embracing these principles, we embark on a journey towards vibrant health and well-being, enriching not only our own lives but also the communities we inhabit.

A Journey into Herbal Dye Origins

on Apr 12 2024
Sustainability and natural alternatives are gaining momentum in the fashion realm where the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda is finding a renewed relevance. At the heart of this revival lies the art of herbal dyeing, called as Ayurvastra - an age-old practice deeply rooted in the ancient Indian system of natural medicine. These systems are now being recognised and highly empowered by the government of India under AYUSH Ministry, an acronym of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. Here we will look into the origins of herbal dyeing, exploring its historical significance, modern-day applications, and the burgeoning market of Ayurvedic textiles. ORIGIN OF AYURVEDIC FABRIC: There is so many evidence that cloth processed with medicinally rich herbs is used for the treatment of wounded soldiers in the war. The wounded soldier wrapped with herbal dyed handloom fabrics for curing the wound which is called as cloth wrapping treatment. Even now the famous martial art Kalaripayattu which is based on all martial art throughout the world used Veeralipattu are seen dressed in red dyed with Kumkum made from turmeric and lime.Even now, in many parts of India new born babies are taken in herbal processed towels to immunize against micro-organisms infections.Ayurveda recognizes the healing properties of herbs and plants, utilizing them not only for medicinal purposes but also for various other applications, including dyeing fabrics. In South India, 18 Sidhhas are considered as ancient scientists and scholars who have contributed in many fields such as Medicine, Astrology, Astronomy, Vasthu, Martial Arts, Meditation, etc. These siddhas also taught the art of Ayurvedic dyeing and making clothes with Ayurvedic Properties. The primary sidhhar named Agastiyar, who lived very near to our place Balaramapuram. Even now, there is a hill named Agasthiyar Kooda, where he lived and taught sidhhas to this disciple. We also had a temple dedicated to Agasthiyar for his contribution to siddha and Ayurvedic Textile in Balaramapuram, now called Ayurvastra. After Agasthiyar, his disciple contributed many new ideas in siddha and was promoted by Cheras, who ruled the southern part of Kerala with his capital at Padmanabhapuram. Ayurvedic textiles are made by the weavers and supplied to kings and royal family. After the British rule in India, the Trivancore kings (heirs of Cheras) had an agreement with the British Government not to invade the country and paid tributes. Slowly Ayurvedic textiles become losing its importance. Herbal dyeing is one step ahead of organic life style. It supports the core concept of organic to eliminate the impact of harmful chemicals and pesticides. It avoids many ailments that are common with conventional clothing. Ayurvastra clothing helps to restore balance within the body systems and strengthen immune system. Another such a garment those stay close to human skin so that all its benefit could be absorbed through the skin. The technology for making herbal clothing is also being utilized for making coir mats, mattresses, door mats and carpets. What Are the Ayurveda Doshas?

on Mar 22 2024
According to Ayurveda, body constitution depends on the metabolic pattern of an individual. This metabolic pattern depends on the Ayurvedic concept called Dosha. Ayurvedic medicine is based on the idea that the world is made up of five elements — Aakash (space), Jala (water), Prithvi (earth), Teja (fire), and Vayu (air). A combination of each element results in three doshas, known as Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. These doshas are believed to be responsible for a person’s physiological, mental, and emotional health. Different body constitution is the reason why two people may have different responses towards the same food and lifestyle. A person’s unique ratio of vata, kapha, and pitta is said to define their Ayurvedic constitution, a blueprint to achieve optimal health. The dominance of elements in the dosha defines their character and functions. For example - Space and air elements dominate Vata doshaThe energy of fire dominates Pitta doshaWater and earth dominate the Kapha dosha Doshas are naturally characterized by causing imbalances or corruptions in the metabolism. Ayurvedic medicine is widely used today for its focus on whole-body healing.According to Ayurveda, an imbalanced dosha leads to poor health and disease. Therefore, opting for food, exercise, and lifestyle habits based on your dosha is believed to promote optimal health and balance. Where do dosha exist? Vedic philosophy believes that a particle represents all the qualities of the universe. Each particle is a mini-universe. Charak Samhita says that as the sun, moon, and air maintain the environmental balance; similarly pitta, kapha and vata balance the body metabolism. The essence of this statement is that vata, pitta, and kapha are not something exclusive to the human body or bodies of living beings. Every particle contains the three bio-physical energies – vata, pitta, and kapha. Dosha is not a physical entity. We might not be able to see vata, pitta, or kapha dosha in a dissected cadaver. But doshas are systems or patterns that help the body to function. The concept of dosha is not exclusive to Ayurveda. Even ancient Greek and Roman medicine, traditional Chinese and Iranian medicine, homeopathy, and many other ancient medicinal systems shared this concept. What does each dosha look like? Based on centuries of Ayurvedic practice, one can determine dosha based on physical, emotional, mental, and behavioural characteristics. Let’s look at a general overview of the dosha characteristics:Vata consists mostly of the two elements air and space (also known as ether) and is generally described as cold, light, dry, rough, flowing, and spacious. Charak Samhita says – “The pitta and kapha dosha are immobile. Like the way the powerful wind drives the clouds everywhere and creates rain; similarly, vata dosha drives the other two doshas (kapha and pitta) throughout the body.” In another reference to vata dosha, the ancient texts say “vata is the controller of the system called body.” It signifies movement, enthusiasm. the vata in nature creates rain and wind currents, even cyclones. In the body, vata can create glandular secretions, movement of the muscles, and even dizziness. vata is not matter/mass. It is an energy that works on the matter. Those with the vata dosha are usually described as slim, energetic, and creative. They’re known for thinking outside the box but can become easily distracted. What’s more, their mood is highly dependent on the weather, people around them, and foods they eat. Strengths: learn quickly, highly creative, multitasker, kind-hearted, flexible, “on the go,” naturally slim Weaknesses: forgetful, anxious, unstable mood, can get overwhelmed easily, highly sensitive to the cold, has trouble sleeping, irregular appetite and eating patterns, prone to digestive issues and gas, poor circulation According to Ayurveda, for optimal health, a vata-dominant person should follow a regular daily routine, manage stress through meditation and other calming activities, and maintain a warm body temperature by avoiding cold weather and consuming warm foods and drinks. Due to their “on-the-go” nature, those with vata-dominant doshas should focus on activities that involve constant movement, such as cycling, running, walking, yoga, tai chi, etc.Kapha is based on earth and water. It can be described as steady, stable, heavy, slow, cold, and soft. Spring is known as kapha season, as many parts of the world slowly exit hibernation. The Sanskrit word Kapha means "to increase, fructify or to grow.” Kapha is the metabolic pattern related to anabolism (building up the process) in the body. It is the system that maintains all the water and earth-related functions. For example, kapha maintains the tissue fluids, mucus, lymph, etc. in the body. Kapha dosha is the ground for our metabolism. It is the biophysical energy that produces and sustains the body. People with this dosha are described as strong, thick-boned, and caring. They’re known for keeping things together and being a support system for others. Kapha-dominant people rarely get upset, think before acting, and go through life in a slow, deliberate manner Strengths: empathetic, caring, trusting, patient, calm, wise, happy, romantic, strong bones and joints, healthy immune system Weaknesses: prone to weight gain, slow metabolism, sluggishness, over-sleeping, breathing issues (i.e., asthma, allergies), higher risk of heart disease, mucus buildup, susceptible to depression, needs regular motivation and encouragement For good health, a kapha-dominant person should focus on regular exercise, a healthy diet, maintain a warm body temperature (e.g., by sitting in a sauna or eating warm food), and establish a regular sleep routine. Kapha doshas work best with a workout buddy and should focus on a combination of cardio and weight-resistance exercise to stay interested and motivated. Any type of movement is beneficial for this group. Pitta dosha is based on fire and water. It’s commonly described as hot, light, sharp, oily, liquid, and mobile. Summer is known as pitta season for its sunny, hot days. The Sanskrit word pitta signifies heat creation, burning up, or color change. In short, any kind of change in the quality of the substance is a result of pitta action. Unlike vata dosha, pitta does not cause any movement, but it transforms the very nature of the substance. Pitta has some unique characteristics that make it indispensable for the body. Pitta dosha is a complex bio-physical pattern that works to balance the heat-based transformative processes inside the body. All chemical reactions, minor or major are a part of pitta metabolism. Ayurveda groups all heat exchange and chemical reactions together as a single metabolic pattern -pitta as they all share the fundamental principles. Pitta dosha has many other properties, functions, special sites inside the body, and subtypes too. People with pitta are said to usually have a muscular build, be very athletic, and serve as strong leaders. They’re highly motivated, goal-oriented, and competitive. Still, their aggressive and tenacious nature can be off-putting to some people, which can lead to conflict Strengths: intelligent, purposeful, learns quickly, self-determined, masters skills easily, strong desire for success, strong, natural leaders, quick metabolism, good circulation, healthy skin and hair Weaknesses: impatient, prone to conflict, always hungry, mood swings when hungry, prone to acne and inflammation, sensitive to hot temperaturesThose with a pitta-dominant dosha should focus on work-life balance and avoid extreme heat (e.g., weather, spicy food) Pitta doshas tend to push themselves too hard and should avoid exercising in the heat. Team sports are an excellent way to stay active while satisfying pitta’s natural competitiveness. Once someone determines their dosha or doshas according to Ayurveda, the next step typically involves incorporating lifestyle practices, dietary adjustments, and potentially herbal remedies to balance the doshas and promote overall well-being. Ayurvedic medicine encourages whole-body healing, which includes physical, mental, and emotional health. This can include practices like yoga, meditation, mindful eating, sleep hygiene, spending time by yourself and with others, and managing your work-life balance In particular, it’s recommended to have a daily routine that encompasses these healthy lifestyle practices. In Ayurveda, a regular routine is believed to keep you in sync with the elements and promote good health. Ayurvedic medicine believes “like attracts like,” as well as that opposites help a person achieve balance and harmony. When a person feels unbalanced, it’s recommended they avoid functions that are similar to their dosha. To know more stay tuned for more such blogs to come.

What Is Bamboo Fabric

on Feb 16 2024
1
'Bamboo fabric' refers to a textile different from conventional textiles from a bamboo plant. Fabrics have been made from bamboo plants for many years. In recent times, making this sturdy and fast-growing timber into fabric is perfected. Some types of bamboo fabric are environmentally friendly and produced legally. But in some processes, it harms the environment or the workers who make it. To understand that you are picking a suitable bamboo fabric, it is vital to understand the fabric better before buying from bamboo fabric manufacturers. The way bamboo fabric is created: Two processes are presently used to create bamboo: fabric from bamboo mechanical and a chemical process. Mechanical process The bamboo’s wood part is smashed into a pulp during the mechanical process. After that, it is broken down utilising enzymes, and the material can be combed and rotated into yarn. The benefit of this process is bamboo fabric has a linen-like feel. It has antifungal and antimicrobial effects, ultraviolet protection, and an anti-static nature. It has fast moisture drying and absorption capabilities, so the fabric can keep you warm in cool weather and chilly in warm weather. Chemical process. Modern bamboo clothes are often made from chemically processed bamboo to beat the high cost of viscose rayon. This rayon is created by crushing and absorbing the bamboo in sodium hydroxide. In this process, the bamboo liquefies the cellulose to form fibres.  How Is Bamboo Fabric Used? This fabric is generally suitable for almost any application where cotton is utilised. Some customers might even choose this cloth from bamboo fabric suppliers in India over cotton because of its numerous advantages. For example, Bamboo cloth is both breathable and stretchier than cotton. It is simple to make this fabric into textiles that have substantial thread counts. The resultant textiles are frequently thinner than their cotton counterparts while maintaining similar or better tensility. Bamboo fabric is suitable for household textiles, including sheets, blankets, and hand towels. However, this fabric is most typically used in apparel for its softness and endurance. This fabric is best for knickers, but it is also used to produce socks, T-shirts and other clothes that touch the skin directly. Because this fabric has alleged antibacterial properties, some customers prefer using it for intimate clothing. However, research has shown that the antibacterial characteristics for which bamboo is well-known are only present in the natural product. Antibacterial benefits are lost once this sort of wood is processed into clothes. It is vital to remember that solely bamboo cloth created using mechanical procedures will have the desirable characteristics that buyers seek. Bamboo rayon and other semi-synthetic materials are not as soft or good as natural fibres, and their antibacterial properties are minimal. Bamboo fabric is an artificial textile created from the pulp of bamboo plants. Bamboo used to make fabrics is easily renewed and does not require chemicals to thrive. Bamboo is regarded as one of the most ecological plants due to its rapid growth, lack of chemical or irrigation requirements, and faster biodegradation than oil-based synthetics.

Nurturing Little Souls: An Introduction to Ayurveda for Babies

on Jan 04 2024
With the onset of interest and belief in the Indian system of ancient wellness around the world, incorporating ancient wisdom into the care of your new baby is not just an emerging trend but it can provide a holistic approach to well-being. In this blog, we'll discuss and delve into the basic principles of Ayurveda – the Indian System of Holistic Wellness and explore how it can be thoughtfully applied to your infant care. Understanding Ayurvedic Principles: At the core pillar of Ayurveda stands at the belief that each individual is a unique combination of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha: representing the fundamental energies that regulate different bodily functions, both physiological and psychological. Understanding the doshas is crucial in Ayurveda as it helps identify the difference in each human being, narrowing down its treatment practices to every individual's constitution rather than the belief of mass medicines, promoting balance and harmony with no side effects to worry about. This allows real root treatment of the problem rather than suppressed short term relief. Lets now understand these doshas a little more: Vata: Vata types tend to be thin and lanky. They are very mentally and physically active and enjoy creative endeavors, meeting new people, and traveling to new places. In a state of equilibrium, individuals with balanced vatas exhibit flexibility, vibrant imagination, and original thinking. Associated with the elements of air and space, Vata governs movement and is linked to qualities such as lightness and changeability. Vata individuals frequently encounter symptoms such as cold extremities, constipation, dry skin, and joint cracking. Insomnia and reduced immunity are prevalent challenges for those with heightened vata sensitivity. Pitta: Pitta types are dominated by the fire element, which makes them innately strong, intense, and irritable. They tend to have a medium build and endurance with powerful musculature. Individuals of this type typically possess a moderate physique, enduring strength, and robust muscles. Their skin, often freckled, readily reddens in sunlight, during physical activity, massages, and when experiencing embarrassment. They exhibit strong determination and excel in adhering to their convictions. Aligned with the elements of fire and water, Pitta is responsible for digestion and metabolism, characterized by qualities like heat and intensity. They boast robust digestion and a hearty appetite, craving both nourishment and challenges. Frequently, they contend with health issues like inflammation, rashes, acne, and loose stools. Kapha: Individuals with a Kapha constitution possess sturdy builds and inherent athleticism, provided they engage in regular exercise to control their inclination towards weight gain. Rooted in the elements of earth and water, Kapha is linked to structure and stability, embodying qualities of heaviness and solidity. They value a systematic, step-by-step approach and prefer maintaining a consistent routine in both their personal and professional lives. Introducing themselves to new environments, meeting new people, and occasionally practicing fasting prove beneficial for them. Applying Ayurvedic Principles to Infant Care: Individualized Care: Ayurveda constitutionally recognizes that each baby is born with a unique psychological and physiological composition, influenced by the predominant dosha. Though the correct composition can only be determined by a certified Ayurveda Practitioner - observing a baby's temperament, physical characteristics, and responses to stimuli can offer slight understanding and insights into their dosha balance. Balanced Nutrition: Ayurvedic dietary principles emphasize the importance of food as nourishment source that align with a baby's dosha. For instance, Vata-predominant babies may benefit from warm, grounding foods, while Kapha dominants actually may need occasional fasting. Pitta-dominant infants may thrive on cooling and hydrating choices. Gentle Massage and Touch: The practice of infant massage is deeply rooted in Ayurveda also know as Abhyanga. Read our blog in details about it at: https://www.wearmiho.com/blogs/news/ayurvedic-baby-massage-oil-for-winter Using warm, natural oils, and gentle massages not only help soothe the nervous system and promote digestion and physical strength, but it also forms an emotional bond between parent and child, helping them understand body clues better until the little human understands itself. Creating a Calming Environment: Considering a baby's dosha, parents can create a perfect room setting for their babies’ overall health and development by adjusting factors such as lighting, room temperature, and choosing the correct sensory stimuli. Vata babies may benefit from warmth and soft textures, while Kapha babies may appreciate a well-ventilated space. Analysing a baby's dosha constitution at home for the basics involves observing various factors like: Physical Characteristics: Consider the baby's build, skin type, and features. This might keep on changing due to initial rapid growth period. Temperament: Observe behaviours, likings, sleep patterns, and reactions to stimuli. Understanding their human behaviour can suggest the constitution widely. Appetite and Digestion: Note how the baby responds to different kinds of foods and feeding habits in corelation to their digestive stress. Ayurveda provides a gentle and holistic framework for caring for the youngest members of our families. Ayurveda encompasses a vast expanse of wisdom, addressing various facets of life. It holds the potential to enrich your life in multiple ways. For personalized advice regarding your baby, consulting with an Ayurvedic expert is recommended. Bonus: Here are some long lost Ayurvedic advices for babies and new mothers: The sun and moonlight have various health benefits that the baby needs during the initial months. Traditionally the day the baby completes his fourth month, he is bathed, made to wear new clothes and brought out of the nursery. The elderly and well-wishers bless the baby and only then the baby is taken to other rooms of the house. the baby's room was fumigated with ayurvedic resins and leaves to counter negative energies and infuse positivity in the room. Utilize Brahmi, heeng, gugulu, and jatamansi for fumigating a baby's room and clothing, effectively neutralizing airborne germs.

In the textile industry, the choice between bamboo and cotton has become a long-standing and pressing debate and people seek a final answer now. If you are also in a similar confusion, this blog will provide you with helpful insights to arrive at a decision. Read on to know which fabric between cotton and bamboo resigns supremacy. Let’s unravel the nuances of these fabrics based on different and crucial parameters. Bamboo Versus Cotton- The Ultimate Face-Off All-season comfort Bamboo- Those yearning for a luxurious and comfortable feel will love bamboo fabric clothing as it is exceptionally soft and smooth for the skin. It offers immense comfort in all seasons because of its natural breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Thus, you can wear bamboo apparel anytime. Cotton- Even cotton is well-known for its comfort feel and breathable characteristics for which it is ideal for everyday wear. However, it may not match the moisture-wicking capabilities of bamboo. Henceforth, when put in comparison to bamboo, cotton may not give a very dry and cool feeling in extreme humidity. Antibacterial Properties Bamboo- A plus one point goes to bamboo for its excellent antibacterial and odor-resistant properties making it a perfect option for those utterly conscious of personal hygiene. A bamboo wearer will be able to bid goodbye to the repercussions of constant sweat, like odor and bacteria. Cotton- When weighed on this parameter, cotton may lag behind as it does not offer natural antibacterial advantages. As a result, it may make way for the growth of bacteria and further lead to the retention of unwanted odor over time. This will also require frequent washes as compared to bamboo fabric clothing. Durability Perks Bamboo- The resilience of bamboo is commendable which allows it to withstand regular wear and washing and that too without compromising on its quality. Thus, it is a popular choice among buyers for offering them a durable, sustainable, and long shelf life of their clothes made from bamboo. Cotton- Contrarily, cotton is also a good choice if you are looking for a durable fabric. However, the drawback here could be that the longevity of cotton garments usually gets adversely influenced by factors such as the quality, weaving process, washing frequency, and more. Thus, it may wear out soon. Environmental Impact Bamboo- Coming from a renewable resource, bamboo is well-known for its eco-friendly origin. It further stands as an eco-warrior as its growth requires minimal water and no pesticides, making it a green choice for environmentally conscious people caring for the planet’s health. Cotton- It is also a natural fabric, but it is highly resource-intensive. Its growth demands significant water and extensive pesticides that altogether raise grave environmental concerns. As a result, the cultivation of cotton impacts the health of the environment and other resources adversely. If you want to relish more advantages of bamboo garments including versatile wear, wide styling options, and more, consider shopping with reputed bamboo fabric suppliers for the best purchase.
